OVERVIEW:
At WP Engine we run the latest release of WordPress to stay current with the new features and security updates. Before migrating your website, please upgrade your site to the latest WordPress version, and also update your plugins. This will prevent many common migration issues.
CAUTION:
Upgrading your WordPress installation and updating plugins may cause unforeseen issues such as changes in website functionality and plugin compatibility. Prior to making any changes we strongly recommend you backup your website so that you can restore it if your updates cause issues.
DISALLOWED PLUGIN CHECK:
Some plugins are poorly coded and therefore disallowed on our platform. Please check the disallowed plugin list to make sure that you remove any disallowed plugins. Alternatively, you may also use our WPEngine Ready plugin to verify your site’s readiness for migration.
UPDATE CHECK:
To check your website’s current version, go to Dashboard > Updates. Click on ‘Check Again’ button to check for the latest available updates. If a WordPress installation upgrade is available, prior to upgrading the website, you will first need to disable all of the plugins first.
DISABLE PLUGINS:
To disable all plugins, go to Plugins > Installed Plugins and click on ‘Active.’ You will now see a list of active plugins. Jot down all of the active plugins because later you will need to re-enable them. Select all plugins, and from the ‘Bulk Actions’ drop down menu select ‘Disable’ and then click on the ‘Apply’ button. All of the plugins will now be disabled.
UPDATE:
Once the plugins have been disabled, you’re ready to update WordPress. Go to Dashboard > Updates and click on the button to update WordPress. Once WordPress is updated, select all of the plugins with available updates, and click on ‘Update Plugins’ to update the plugins.
ENABLE PLUGINS:
After applying the updates, you’re ready to re-enable the plugins. Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins, select all of the plugins that need to be re-enabled, then from the ‘Bulk Action’ drop down menu select ‘Activate’ and then click on the ‘Apply’ button.
