WordPress 3.7.1 Has Dropped – WP Engine Upgrade Plan

Austin Gunter 10.29.2013

Hey Folks, WordPress 3.7.1 has officially dropped, and WP Engine will begin rolling out customer updates soon.

Tomorrow, the first batch of customers will receive emails notifying them about the timeframe their sites will be automatically updated to 3.7.1. Upon receiving the first email, customers will have about 2 weeks to run any tests on our staging area to make sure their code and plugins works nicely with 3.7.1. And yes, all WP Engine customer sites will benefit from our brand new Automatic Upgrade Protection feature.

Automatic Upgrade Protection is WP Engine’s new feature that, in addition to automating the process of upgrading your site to the new version of WordPress, this proprietary feature also automates and manages the basic testing and validation of the upgrade to 3.7.1 as well. If your site is upgrading and it fails the test we automatically restore your site to the previous version of WordPress.

Full details about WordPress 3.7.1 can be found at make.wordpress.org.

As always, thanks for choosing WP Engine!

Yes I saw on Facebook that WP 3.7.1 was out.
I’ve just updated a couple of local sites so it will be interesting to see how the automatic feature goes on the live sites.

How long do you anticipate it is going to take to roll out the 3.7.1 update to all your customers? We never got the upgrade to 3.7.0.

      Hey Scott,

I’m Dustin Meza, one of WP Engine’s support managers, and the lead on managing all customer updates. Thanks for your question – I’m happy to clarify things.

When it comes to Functional Updates (which are different from security updates) like 3.7 and 3.7.1 we put together a roll out plan for customers to update that includes a few weeks for them to test the update to ensure compatibility. When 3.7.1 was released, we continued with our 3.7 rollout plan but replaced 3.7.1 as the version we were upgrading customers to. So no one will be updated to 3.7, instead everyone will be updated to 3.7.1.

We have started communicating to customers their upgrade date and will continue over the next few weeks. If you are interested in being upgraded early you can always contact our Support team and request we run our update process now and we will be happy to.

Hope this helps, I’m happy to answer any other questions on the upgrade topic you might have.

      Dustin

    Hey team,

I tested upgrading today, the update archived all my sites! The restore feature saved my life as usual πŸ™‚ I searched around and found somebody mentioning the same problem with a network of networks (my setup) what can we do before/after the upgrade to prevent this?

Hey Lasse, I’m not sure about this with your site. If you would, can you please file a support ticket or start a live chat so our team can look at your site?

      Thanks!
