Why Restore to Another Environment?
Sometimes you need to revert a site back to a previous version to check out an old feature, or investigate to see if a site issue existed before an update. Historically this has been a difficult process to achieve without actually reverting the site to an earlier version.
WP Engine now supports restoring a backup from one environment into a different environment. You also have the option to restore with or without bringing the database over to the separate environment.
When restoring with database from one environment to a different environment, we’ll handle the domain translations between the sites to ensure that your restore is functional on the new environment. Learn more about these domain transformations.
How To Restore to Another Environment
To restore to another environment, navigate to the Overview page for the source environment. Then, navigate to the Backup points page from the left-hand navigation.
Choose the backup point you would like to use, and then click the Restore button. You’ll be presented with a modal which will ask where you want to restore that backup, a choice on whether or not to restore the database, and a field that will allow you to customize what email addresses get notified.
Choose the different target environment to which you would like to restore this backup.
When you’re happy with your selection, click the Restore backup button to trigger the process. We will automatically trigger a new back point for the target site to ensure you have a valid rollback point in case something goes wrong.
That’s it! You’ll get an email when the process completes at the email you specified. From there you’ll be able to click around your restored site on a different environment, all without affecting your live site.
