If you are on a Startup, Scale, or Growth plan, you have new “Copy to” and “Copy from” buttons available in the Overview pane for your environments. In this article we will explain how to use the copy tool to copy your environments up/down within your site. Watch the quick video below, or read on to learn how to use this tool.
Accessing the Overview page
In order to copy your environments to or from one another, first you will need to navigate to the Overview page. To do this, click Sites at the top of your User Portal, then select your site from the list. By default, this will take you to the Overview page of your site’s production environment.
If you have not added any environments to your site yet, you can do so by clicking Set up site.
Using Copy To/Copy From
Once you have arrived to the Overview page for your environment, we recommend taking a quick detour over to the “Backup points” section at the left to take a backup of both the environment you are copying to, and from. After, you can use the Copy to or Copy from buttons to copy this environment to or from another one.
Please note: You must have another environment within the site (e.g. staging and/or development environments) in order to use the Copy to/Copy from buttons. If you only have one environment, the options to copy will be greyed out. See Staging and Development Environments for help setting these up.
Once you select the environment you would like to copy to/from, you will be taken to the “Copy Environment” screen. Here, select the backup point of the environment you are copying from, and choose whether or not to include the database.
Once you select the environment you would like to copy to/from, you will be taken to the “Copy Environment” screen. Here, select the backup point of the environment you are copying from, and whether or not to include the database.
Your website’s database includes things like the content of your posts, settings, and users. Last, select the email address to receive the notification when the copy is finished. You will be asked to preview the copy and confirm the details, and then the copy will begin.
You will receive an email when the copy completes.
Copying Between Environments in Different Sites
If you have “environment1” in “Site 1” and need to copy to “environment2” in “Site 2,” there are two ways to accomplish this.
Option one is to copy from “environment1” in the process of creating “environment2” within “Site 2.” In the Add Environment pane, you will be able to select the “Copy from existing” option:
If you need to copy between environments on different sites after the initial environment creation, you can use Option B.
Option B is to use the “Restore to Target” function to restore a backup of “environment1” in “Site 1” over to “environment2” in “Site 2.” First, take a backup of “environment1” using the Backup points option in the left hand navigation. Then, select to Restore that backup. In the Restore pane you will be able to choose a target environment. The environment you choose will be restored using the backup you selected.
Copying Single-Environment Sites
If you have single-environment sites on your account, you may use the Copy option from the Overview page for these sites to copy to and from other single-environment sites. The steps work the same as above! Watch the video below for a quick look at this process.
